The umbrella serves as a shield against water or heat. Sometimes it is a symbol of resistance, and often simply an everyday object that might be left behind on the next train. In Poumon d’Eau, it becomes a performative amplifier, a porous loudspeaker that directs sounds into the space that we normally overlook. Inspired by the fact that the world’s oceans act like permeable lungs and produce over 50% of the world’s oxygen through photosynthesis and phytoplankton, the piece revolves around the rhythms of photosynthesis. It invites us to a moment of shared listening with aquatic plants and underwater creatures, creating a fragile membrane for hearing across species boundaries.
