Baptiste Cazaux comes to the Reithalle at Kaserne Basel with a dance on the volcano in response to the dark effects of omnipresent hypercapitalism. His choreography That's Twisted springs from a deep melancholy that makes it difficult for all of us today to imagine a joyful future for humanity.

The numerous crises of recent years (wars and genocides, the rise of the extreme right, COVID-19, etc.) trigger a paralyzing feeling of helplessness in us that is difficult to overcome. For Baptiste Cazaux, this is the starting point for exploring the party anthems of the 2000s—post-crash party pop, the music that followed the stock market crash. The presentism (compulsion to be present) described in the lyrics of these songs, which is inherent in YOLO culture, becomes a kind of escape for this generation: The past is over, there is no future, and the present (already in ruins) becomes the only space and time worth living in – which is why it is essential to enjoy it to the fullest.

Britney Spears sings: Keep on dancing 'till the world ends, Ke$ha says: The party don't stop, and LMFAO shuffles through a deserted, devastated New York after a dance epidemic that drove people mad.

Welcome to the beautiful post-apocalyptic world of Baptiste Cazaux!

With an explosive, almost exploding body, he dances like a DJ and lets samples, genres, and references collide. That's Twisted is a haunting and multi-layered collage: a psychedelic strategy for overcoming nostalgia.

Part of Tanzfest Basel.
