Porträt von Krõõt Juurak

Lesson oscillates between stand-up comedy, therapy session and school. A «lesson» with a theater audience - not to learn something, but to be forced to do time, as is so often the case at school. Krõõt Juurak takes on the role of the teacher, not to teach, but because Krõõt simply plays this role for the duration of the performance.

The original title of the work was Performance Therapy: psychoanalysis sessions from more than two years were therefore incorporated into the rehearsal process for Lesson. They became the material for the performance. In Lesson, therapy therefore also consistently appears as a form of education - after all, everything else can be googled!

Lesson shows how fluid the boundaries between therapy, theater and school can be. With dry humor, authority and ease, Krõõt charmingly guides the audience through this unusual, late-night lesson - without any lectures. One thing is certain: this performance is 1000 times better than school - sitting through time has rarely been so exciting!

Biography

Krõõt Juurak, born in 1981 in Tallinn, Estonia, is an artist, performer, stand-up comedian, and dancer based in Vienna. They studied choreography at ArteZ and Fine Arts at the Sandberg Institute, Amsterdam. Together with Alex Bailey, they have taken workplace conflicts and put them on the stage (Internal Conflict), performed for pets (Performances for Pets), and even assigned the role of director to their one-year-old son (Codomestication).

‘As a choreographer and performance artist, Krõõt Juurak has a penchant for self- sabotage, for getting caught up in the awkwardness of the moment, trusting far more to the dramaturgy of the endeavour than to its actual success. Juurak discovered the genre of stand-up comedy for themself some time ago, but with Juurak, the audience occasionally has to wait a little longer for the punchlines. But what if the performance, and its wit, still work even when they are not meant to be funny at all? Indeed, Krõõt excels at the great art of comic unease’ (Wiener Festwochen)

Luca Büchler is a performer, choreographer and visual artist. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Zurich University of the Arts and is currently studying in the Transmedia Art class at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. His performative and installation works have been shown at Kunstverein Gartenhaus, Vienna, Cabaret Voltaire, Zurich, Les Urbaines, Lausanne, Kunstmuseum St. Gallen, Salzburger Kunstverein, Deichtorhallen, Hamburg, Laurenz, Vienna, and Spoiler, Berlin, a.o.
