------------------------------------
For city dwellers, country life still feels authentic: it smells like cows when they head out to the countryside. But people who live in the countryside sense that it no longer exists the way it used to.
Countryside 1 - Waldenburg xplores the economic and social changes facing rural areas in Switzerland. From Basel-Stadt, the audience travels by bus to the Waldenburg Valley in Baselland. And from Waldenburg, people travel through their own community. Together, you move through a landscape that at first glance appears rural and idyllic: a picturesque center, the Stedtli, surrounded by green meadows, a castle ruin, and dense forests that stretch up the foothills of the Jura. The closer you get, the more you learn about a complex history shaped by trade across the Hauenstein Pass, the watchmaking industry, and its decline.
Director Maximilian Hanisch, who grew up in the countryside himself, has spent half his life in cities. It wasn’t until he moved to Switzerland, where the countryside has a different visibility and political significance, that he found a reason to return. Together with people from Waldenburg, the performer Jasmin Gloor, his production team, six students from the Master’s program in Scenography at the Academy of Art and Design Basel/FHNW, and their lecturors, he invites the audience on the world’s smallest road trip.
Parcours Waldenburg
Following a theatrical journey, you'll walk from the outside in, immersing yourself in the world of Waldenburg. Along the way, you'll encounter several artistic installations created through an exploration of Waldenburg and its residents. Through a variety of perspectives, they learn about the significance of the mountain pass road today and in the past, about a feminist pioneer from Waldenburg, about wandering gardens, and the diversity of insects. They hear about Waldenburg’s diverse cultural scene and visit a panoramic painting on a mountain meadow.
Inszenierung Revue Thommen
The tour ends in the rooms of the former headquarters of Revue Thommen AG. The abandoned watch factory, to which workers once commuted daily from Waldenburg, becomes the stage for a performance that explores the future of rural areas and of Waldenburg itself. On stage stands a performer who recounts her journey here and her encounters and experiences. Before the audience’s eyes, she weaves together her own experiences, interview transcripts, and videos, attempting to paint a picture of a community in transition.
Biography
Maximilian Hanisch (he/him) is a director and performer. He studied theater directing at the Thomas Bernhard Institute of the Mozarteum in Salzburg and Expanded Theater at the Bern University of the Arts. In his projects, he is constantly seeking new territory in terms of both content and form, selecting his artistic tools according to the theme. He organizes images and texts according to musical principles, combining methods from contemporary dance, documentary theater, and visual arts. To this end, he selects topics of high political relevance and translates them into theatrical models. His thematic focus lies on the intersection of modern surveillance technology and digital intimacy, the translation of discourses from architecture and urban planning into theater, and the use of film plots as performative frameworks. His works have been presented at venues including the Dampfzentrale Bern, the Kaserne Basel, the Roxy Birsfelden, the Theater Neumarkt Zurich, the Belluard Festival Fribourg, Hellerau—European Center for the Arts Dresden, the Kunstfest Weimar, the Gogolfest Kiev, and the Ming Contemporary Art Museum Shanghai.
