An Evening on Feminist Critiques of Technology
Most of us can only guess where digital technologies and AI are headed right now—and at what pace. One Big Tech hype replaces the next, one digital prophet succeeds another on the throne of the super-rich. Across all platforms, algorithms determine what we see more than our own interests do; our data is sold, reused, and exploited; and a handful of large corporations wield enormous power over technological development and its applications. Laws have so far done little to curb this, as the Big Tech elite sits at the same table as political leaders. There is also a clear underrepresentation of women and queer people in the development, leadership, and commercial exploitation of digital technologies and platforms.
What does all this mean from a feminist perspective? Together with Shusha Niederberger, a researcher and educator working at the intersection of art and technology, and Elisa Lindinger, co-director of the feminist nonprofit organization SUPERRR Lab in Berlin, we ask: What defines feminist critique of technology, and how can it be translated into concrete action?

Shusha Niederberger works as an artist, educator, and researcher on the digital present. She studied media art, has conducted research on digital commons and data-driven infrastructures, and wrote her dissertation on the emerging position of users in platform capitalism.
Elisa Lindinger co-directs SUPERRR Lab, a nonprofit organization in Berlin that advocates for equitable digital futures. At SUPERRR, she applies an intersectional feminist lens to current issues in internet policy, always with the goal of placing people—rather than technology—at the center of the discussion.

The salon serves as a meeting place and gathering spot for current issues and topics, often building on—and always enriching—the feminist program at the Kaserne Basel. The series is curated by Katha Baur, Caroline Faust, Franca Schaad, and Franziska Schutzbach.
