Volcano Time is a new stage spectacle from Kate McIntosh that dives into the curious experience of collective emotion - premiering at PACT Zollverein in autumn 2026.
Can feeling erupt through a group? Can it flow from person to person and escalate? What sparks attention, or calms tension?
Volcano Time experiments enthusiastically with theatrical glitter and mystery, blending smoky entertainment with amateur biology to probe what makes human nervous-systems tune to each other, how feelings emerge, and how folks get tangled or soothed in their mood.
McIntosh treats performance as a form of public gathering, always with a sharp focus on the live connection between people. After several years of immersive productions, Volcano Time returns McIntosh’s work to a traditional stage and seating - while still inviting the audience to engage their senses, tune in to the subtle sensitivity of the crowd, and enquire how collective emotion might fuel resilience.
Performance artist Kate McIntosh returns to the traditional stage setting after a series of immersive, participatory works that physically engage the audience. Following her last appearance at the Basel Theater Festival in 2018 with In Many Hands, we are delighted to finally welcome her back to the Kaserne with her new performance, FLOW.

Biography
Kate McIntosh (she/they) is an artist who practices across the boundaries of performance and installation. Originally from Aotearoa New Zealand, she is based in Brussels.
Since 2004 Kate has developed an internationally recognised body of stage and trans-disciplinary work which tours extensively in Europe as well as to Asia, Oceania, and the Americas.
Her works often focus on the physicality of both performer and audience, the manipulation of objects and materials, and the development of direct relations between audience members. Her practice is guided by the misuse of objects, playfulness with the public, a love of theatrical images and unruly humour.
Key works include the interactive-installations Worktable (2011), In Many Hands (2016), Lake Life (2023) and the performances Dark Matter (2009), All Ears (2013), To Speak Light Pours Out (2020).
