Borda, the new piece by choreographer Lia Rodrigues, is a celebration of imagination beyond all boundaries.

To mark the 35th anniversary of the Lia Rodrigues Companhia de Danças, the Brazilian choreographer opens her suitcases full of fabrics with which she has traveled to theaters around the world. Together with a new generation of dancers and the Centro de Artes da Maré, the art and training center that Rodrigues runs in one of Rio de Janeiro's largest favelas, the epic evening Borda was created.

In Portuguese, the word “borda” means embroidery, decoration, but also a border, something that separates. Borders create contradictions: hospitality and hostility, locals and non-locals. Who belongs and who doesn't? Who has a right to exist? Metaphorically speaking, the word “borda” also means imagination, the ability to overcome boundaries. And that is exactly what Borda is: a celebration of imagination, an embroidery of otherness. Drawing on the energy of the collective and using simple materials such as fabric and plastic, Rodrigues creates a unique visual world. With great care, what has been separated is brought back together again.
