With LETTERS, Beatrice Fleischlin and Diego Aramburo are finally back at the Kaserne Basel following their showing last December and their performances at the Dokumentartagen!

A series of letters that the two queer artists write to their children and their mothers forms the basis for LETTERS—a personal, social, and poetic account of familial, generational, and cultural processes of transformation.

By sharing the fragility and, at the same time, the strength of their lived realities, the two artists create a space of empathy where difference becomes negotiable and solidarity is possible beyond identity-based boundaries. The work also takes on a sense of urgency against the backdrop of growing societal backlash: As public debates increasingly stigmatize queer and migrant people and political forces push for a return to traditional notions of identity and family, it becomes clear just how exclusive the much-vaunted “freedom” often is.

LETTERS brings to light the lived reality of queer families—not as a provocation, but as an example of how parenthood, queer identity, transnational belonging, and traditional social spaces are not mutually exclusive. In this way, LETTERS becomes a moving attempt at healing and tenderness through the written word.
