The Peoples’ Council is documentary theatre, a social experiment and a protest. It explores civil society’s political participation in Basel’s pharmaceutical industry and examines the impacts and interrelationships of a highly unequal global system. What can we do to make it more inclusive? Do the people of Basel have political agency? Who should be involved in decision making?
The Peoples’ Council takes its origin in the ambition of a group of activists - the #EmptyChairs Campaign - aiming to create a counter model to the existing state-centric, highly polarized UN system. Their idea and this council now become reality on stage as an artistic-activistic experiment, in public space and together with the audiences and people partaking in it. With many national and international speakers the audience will gradually step into the role of taking decisions themselves and exchange their knowledge in order to find creative solutions for seemingly unchangeable circumstances.
As a final event, after 4 days of sessions at Kaserne Basel, we’ll take the streets on Sunday, December 13, starting at 3 p.m. Save the date! Admission is free; more details for December 13 will follow!
The People's Council is testing new ways of co-creating internationally, with allies and councils planned in Basel, Hamburg, Palermo, Berlin and Johannesburg. We believe in the collective knowledge of people and their transformational power to make a difference.

Biography
Antje Schupp is a director, performer and author. She studied directing for theatre and opera at the Bavarian Theatre Academy in Munich as well as theatre, film and media studies and cultural and gender studies at the University of Vienna. She directs theatre and music theatre, creates own productions in the independent performing arts scene, often works in co-creative working processes or with non-professional performers and likes to create site-specific projects. She is teaching at various universities in Switzerland and Germany.
Antje has extensive experience with different techniques of play development. She often works with a biographical approach and interdisciplinary. She is interested in political, ecological and social issues and combines different stylistic elements in her works to create multi-layered, partly documentary, partly fictional narratives. Versatility, experimentation, co-creation and interaction with the audience are at the centre of her work.
She staged productions at Theater Basel, Schauspielhaus Zürich, Theater am Neumarkt, Kaserne Basel, Konzert Theater Bern, Schauspielhaus Vienna, Burgtheater Vienna or Staatstheater Augsburg among others, her projects got invited to festivals such as Theaterspektakel Zurich, Politik im Freien Theater, Berlin Theatertreffen "Shifting Perspectives", Antigel Geneva, Impulse Theatre Festival or to Heidelberger Stückemarkt. Antje Schupp regularly works in international collaborations, e.g. in South Africa for PINK MON€Y, in Lebanon for Nouvelle Nahda, in Kosovo for LOVE.STATE.KOSOVO or in Brasil for Corpo.Cidade.Politica.______
She staged opera productions of Mozart, Massenet, Vivaldi and Menotti as well as various works in contemporary music theatre, e.g. in 2023 the European Premiere of the renown opera Angel's Bone by Du Yun and Royce Vavrek, who received the Pulitzer Prize.
Antje Schupp is the winner of the Festspielpreis of the Zurich Festival 2020 - associated with the cross-disciplinary premiere of the filmic essay REVUE 2020 in co-production with Zurich Opera House and Schauspielhaus Zurich. In 2021 she received the Jakob-Michael-Reinhold-Lenz-Prize for Dramatic Arts for her project The Courageous Majority as well as the Swiss Performing Arts Award 2021 of the Federal Office of Culture in Switzerland.
