What does it mean to be “real” in a world where we have long since come to encounter ourselves through the media? What remains of the “real” when we recognize each other only through images? What happens when images begin to alienate themselves from humans and create their own bodies?
In Alexandra Bachzetsis’ new performance, images of the body become documents of experience, sexual violence, age, gender, and race. At the same time, familiar visual worlds—such as social media formats, home workout videos, cooking videos, styling tips, dance tutorials, and confession reels—are woven into the performance.
The performance is framed by a live film that constantly negotiates the relationship between the documentary, the real, and the fictional. A camera accompanies the action and produces a parallel staged reality. Everything that happens can become an image.
