Dolls are meant to be looked at. But what happens when they start to move? Can they dance?
SYNTHETIC / Artefact is a choreography exploring the figure of the doll in the history of European ballet and theater, as well as in African and Asian dance forms.
We find ourselves in a distant future: the landscapes are magnificent and yet desolate. In this world, we encounter puppets. Across cultures and centuries, they were created to be looked at—motionless and exposed to the gaze. The piece begins at the moment they start to move.
Straddling the line between realism and artificiality, archive and speculation, SYNTHETIC / Artefact turns its gaze toward bodies that refuse to be perceived as objects, capturing their unique beauty.
Following its premiere at the Gessnerallee, Tiran Willemse—a dancer and choreographer from South Africa who lives in Zurich—brings an impressive ensemble to the Kaserne for the first time. The cast includes Davide-Christelle Sanvee, who has previously presented her work Who’s Afraid here; Élie Autin; Ophelia Young, who was previously active as a LAB Artist at the Kaserne LAB; and Elisabeth Mulenga.

Biografie
Tiran Willemse is an interdisciplinary collaborative artist working in the field of dance, theater, video and performance with Trajal Harrell, Jerome Bel, Ligia Lewis, Wu-Tsang (moved by the motion), Deborah Hay, Eszter Salamon, Meg Stuart and Andros Zins-Browne. Willemse's practice centers on the interrogation of presence and absence in the performance of identity, he endeavors to foster new desires in the imagination through a visceral experience. His work has been presented by Palais de Tokyo Paris, Musée cantonal des Beaux-Arts Lausanne Museum Macro Rome, Impulstanz Wien, Santarcangelo Festival Italy, Kunsthaus Baselland, Tanzquartier Wien, Swiss Institute New York and Arsenic Lausanne. Willemse won the swiss performance prize 2023 and lives and works in Zurich.
