Redefining Masculinity - Part 1: Role Models and Pressure to Perform

Regardless of our gender, male socialization has a profound impact on our lives, our relationships, and how we interact with one another. What messages about masculinity do people socialized as men—and indeed everyone else—receive? How do these messages shape the way we live? Caught between the pressure to perform, the suppression of emotions, and societal role expectations, many men face conflicting demands.

The first event in our three-part series “Renegotiating Masculinities” explores socialization processes and images of masculinity with gender researcher Diana Baumgarten and social worker Christoph Gosteli (Fachstelle Gewalt Bern): How does masculinity emerge, what consequences can tough-guy and violence-oriented images of masculinity have, and what other paths are there?

Moderation: Franziska Schutzbach

The three-part series “Renegotiating Masculinities” (April 21, 2026, May 5, 2026, and May 26, 2026) explores male socialization and the various images of masculinity that shape our society. It also addresses anti-feminist and right-wing (online) radicalization. The series examines how masculinist gender politics are utilized by reactionary forces. In doing so, we engage with both analyses and potential solutions. Together with various experts, we discuss findings from research as well as from practical work with boys and men.

The series is a collaboration with the Office for Gender Equality of the Canton of Basel-Stadt.
