Artist in residence Hiba Mehrez writes about her Showing:
In the game of hopscotch, there's always one number we skip over. Is it possible that I envision my life within the confines of this game? What am I skipping over?
This showing will be an exploration, a journey into self-introduction, an unraveling of identity, work, and passions, and their interplay with the broader community, society, and the inherent definitions that shape us.
Is my presentation a direct address to a collective, and which one? Do I embody now the epitome of individualism? Should I?
As I navigate the interstice of personal experience and societal discourse, I will draw upon Hanna Arendt's article, "We Are Refugees," to underscore the notion that the personal is indeed political. The stage will become a public platform on which we will take up and scrutinize the questions that Arendt already posed in the last century.
