One cannot talk about Garth Erasmus, born in Uitenhage, SA, in 1956, without first recognizing the Khoisan as the First Nation of the South African Cape. The injustices suffered by the indigenous peoples of South Africa—including enslavement, genocide, and apartheid—play a central role in his work. Nevertheless, the music that Erasmus stages with his Broken String Ensemble glows from within and radiates a vitality that exhibits an intense, exciting, and fascinating relationship with grief. Never have misery, liberation, and re-appropriation been so close and so moving.
