“Eternal love? The practice of marriage” with Fleur Weibel

Why do people get married today? And how exactly do they do it? Sociologist Fleur Weibel has accompanied heterosexual and homosexual couples during their marriage preparations and weddings, conducted numerous conversations about marriage and published a study on the subject. Fleur Weibel and Franziska Schutzbach take us into today's marriage practices, the culture of marriage proposals, romantic ideals of love, promises of happiness, the reproduction of gender stereotypes and the questions: What is the significance of marriage and the institution of marriage today? How is marriage celebrated, “narrated” and made meaningful - but also questioned?

On this evening, we will embark on a search for clues. In addition to the current practice of marriage, we will also explore the history of marriage criticism and feminist and queer theorizing. Marriage has always been a contested subject, between criticism and idealization. And last but not least, it is also a central place for the production and reproduction of the gender order.
