Julian Vogel auf Rollschuhen

A spectacle that unfolds to the beat of a drum roll: a bicycle that defies convention. A glittering hit on roller skates. Plates dancing on the finest rods. And in the middle of it all, a ceramic ball circles calmly in the center of the room. Like a virtuoso one-man band, Julian Vogel plays with traditional circus techniques such as Chinese plate spinning, torn-apart bicycles, and drum rolls. Pure, simple, clear, yet daring and brilliant.

Julian Vogel comes from Lucerne and lives in Basel. After studying psychology and art history at the University of Bern, he went to the Academy for Circus and Performance Art in Tilburg (NL). He is a prize winner of circusnext 2020/21 and is involved in numerous European art projects as a performer, dramaturge, and music producer. He co-founded Cie. Trottvoir in 2012 and KLUB GIRKO in 2017.

Parallel to the performances of “Ceramic Circus,” the Roxy Birsfelden is showing a work by Cie. Trottvoir, which Julian Vogel co-founded.

Biography

Julian Vogel is an artist, performer, and sound designer.

After studying psychology and art history at the University of Bern (BA, 2014), Julian Vogel studied at the Academy of Circus and Performance Art in Tilburg, Netherlands, focusing on the diabolo (BA, 2019). Since then, he has been working on CHINA SERIES, a series of performances, installations, and videos centered around the diabolo, which he makes himself out of ceramic. With this interdisciplinary project combining circus, performance, and visual arts, he is the winner of Circus Next 2020/2021.

Julian Vogel lives in Basel and is involved in various projects in Switzerland and Europe as an author, performer, producer, and sound designer. Among other things, he co-founded the Compagnie Trottvoir (2012) and KLUB GIRKO (2017), with which he has realized several projects. He has worked with Compagnie sh. and Panama Pictures (NL), where he has also been an associate artist since 2021. In 2023, he founded his own company, Cie. unlisted.

In 2024, he was commissioned by Les SUBS in Lyon to design an installation and scenography for their summer festival: CRESCENDO, a monumental work 9 m high and 70 m long, consisting of a hundred ceramic tubes. In the same year, Julian Vogel created CERAMIC CIRCUS, a solo piece in which circus and ceramics collide. As part of this creation, he collaborated closely with the porcelain manufacturer REVOL, which designed and produced a plate made of recycled porcelain for his performance. The projects CERAMIC CIRCUS and CHINA SERIES are currently on tour in Switzerland and Europe.
