Besides being the first female rap artist from Mali, Ami Yerewolo is also one of the most prominent campaigners against sexism and a fervent champion of women's empowerment in her homeland. She utilises rap as a medium to convey her emotions and anger, earning multiple accolades along the way. Ami blends traditional Malian instruments, such as the kora harp, the ngoni and the yebara shaker, with powerful beats and rap lyrics in Bambara, the native language of southern Mali. She is also the founder of the first all-female festival in Mali. As a part of Culturescapes 2023 Sahara, she will present her latest album, AY, featuring up-tempo Afro-beats that get the adrenaline pumping.
