The workshop is open to people with or without a vocal or movement practice. During the workshop you will be guided through embodied processes of experiencing your immediate surroundings, with the goal of finding a sonic inner language and building up towards a more collective sound experience unique to the space, moment, and group constellation.

Different vocal textures will be explored, especially those relating to the archaic voice, in the form of traditional work songs from ethnomusicological archives.

The workshop will start at Kaserne Basel for the morning portion of it, and will continue onto a different space in the neighbourhood. This is to experiment with the acoustics of different spaces of the city and to collect multimedial inputs to inform the vocal practice.

As participants, you should commit to one full day of the workshop. The format will be repeated on the following day, with variations lead by the group’s own dynamic. You can bring a “particle” that will be elaborated throughout the workshop, this may be as short as a word, to a sentence, to a short melody. You are also invited to bring a hoodie and something to cover their eyes. Physical contact is encouraged but not obligatory.

Mario Espinoza (he/him) (El Tigre, VE 1995*) is a Venezuelan multidisciplinary artist, working in Switzerland mostly as a performer. Educated at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, he dedicates his practice to time-based arts, pursuing themes of forgotten memory in folk tradition, and bringing his own intimacy and personal processes into the public sphere, where he often makes interventions. He is also active as a musician, where he sings and composes in multiple languages, and as an art mediator at the Migrosmuseum für Gegenwartskunst, where he’s developed the embodied tour format Resonance Journey. He has performed in various Swiss institutions such as the Centre d’Art Contemporain de Genève, Kunsthaus Zurich, Centre Culturel Suisse, and Swiss Embassy in Beijing.
