What is Ballroom?
Ballroom was created by Black and Latinx trans women in Harlem, NYC, in the late 1960s as a response to racism in the white pageant scene. It’s a subculture by and for the BIPOC LGBTQ+ community, where participants compete in categories celebrating beauty, fashion, and performance. If you’re not part of the community, please be mindful of the space you take. Want to walk? Study the categories beforehand! Have questions? Reach out to the organizers—we’re here to guide you.
