Matana Roberts is an internationally acclaimed saxophonist, composer and performer, who cleverly blends improvisation, visual art and poetry to create a unique expression. Matana is probably best known for the 12-part work Coin Coin. In a style reminiscent of Great American Novels, Matana weaves together stories, biographical experiences, African-American history, melodies, spiritual songs and imagery into what they describe as a «panorama quilt». The long-awaited fifth part, In The Garden, was published in 2023. This evening they will be performing in a duo with artist, musician and theorist Mattin, who works conceptually with noise and improvisation. Through his practice writing and pedagogy, he explores performative forms of estrangement as a way to deal with structural alienation and has exhibited and toured worldwide.
The second position of the evening will be preceded by a performance by FONCÉ, between black poetry and sound art. Storytelling and remembrance are at the centre of his creative practice. FONCÉ is interested in counter-narratives and marginalised cultural perspectives that question dominant historical narratives.
