How does it feel to come home from prison? What has become of your neighbourhood, your family, your body? How can you look to the future when the past haunts you?
The Days Out There is a documentary musical performed by women and trans* people who spent years in Argentinian prisons and are now free. Since the moment of their release, their biographies have been thwarted by unforeseen events - they work as taxi drivers, play in a rock band, sing cumbia, earn their living as sex workers and organise demonstrations for the visibility of trans* people.
The musical, which traditionally romanticises the world of outsiders with virtuoso performers, becomes a tool for retelling their stories - by this group itself! Through song, dance and performance, they make the genre their own and illuminate it in unexpected ways.
The Days Out There was preceded by a film project that was realised in collaboration with Basel film producer Vadim Jendreyko and takes an impressive look at the former Caseros prison, a panopticon prison in Buenos Aires. The film, which premiered at the Berlinale this spring, will be shown on August 27 at Rossstall 2 at Kaserne Basel.
As part of Theaterfestival Basel.
