Female Perspectives on Music between Early Modern Times and Today
Clara Schumann often had to put her artistic activities second to the needs of her husband Robert, Fanny Mendelssohn was completely overshadowed by her brother Felix; 200 years earlier, on the other hand, Barbara Strozzi was a real star whose fame lasted long after her death. Isabella Leonarda, superior of a monastery, was the first woman to have her music printed. Based on the biographies of female musicians from the period around 1600-1850 and the social structures surrounding them, Anaïs Chen, Giovanna Baviera and Matthias Klenota discuss both the obstacles and opportunities faced by female composers and musicians in earlier times and in today's classical music business. With live music from works by 17th century female composers and improvisations.
