«Let's say who we are» - history and present of the lesbian movement in Switzerland

What is the connection between the recently deceased jazz pianist Irène Schweizer and the lesbian movement? Why did authors of the magazine Lesbenfront publish under pseudonyms? How did women's football influence the Lesbian Organization Switzerland (LOS)? Historian Luzia Knobel and Alessandra Widmer, co-director of the LOS, reflect on the concerns of the lesbian movement in the 1970s, as well as current resistance strategies. This salon is dedicated to unheard, emancipatory stories of lesbian activism and shows how it continues to question the supposedly given order today.

Alessandra Widmer (she/her) studied history and German philology in Basel, Bern and Vienna. After detours into gender studies and gender equality work, she is now Co-Managing Director of the Lesbian Organization Switzerland (LOS). With LOS, she campaigns for the rights and visibility of lesbians, bisexuals and queer women throughout Switzerland.

Luzia Knobel (she/her) is a historian and gender researcher and works in cultural and historical education. She is co-coordinator of the Frauenstadtrundgang association and implements various public history projects, for example for the Neues Museum Biel, the Geschichtstage Basel and the Kulturbüro Riehen.
