New York choreographer Faye Driscoll is showing her work in Switzerland for the first time - for several years she has been delighting critics and audiences alike and has won the prestigious Bessie Award, to name just one.

Created with the Bremen-based dance company Unusual Symptoms, CALVING is a lively, dynamic sculpture of bodies, sounds, smells, liquids and objects. Six performers stage a constantly changing tableau vivant on a moving, bed-like stage and unfold a ritual of touch. The audience surrounds the performers, close enough to smell the scenery and feel the pull of their movement.

The title Calving refers to the breaking off of large masses of ice at the edge of a glacier and serves as a metaphor for the slow merging of bodies. Boundaries become blurred - between the performers, between stage and audience, between choreography, sound and sculpture.

CALVING is a breathing, breathtaking work - a choreography full of micro-events, on the threshold of the perceptible. A luminous evening in a dark time that activates all the senses and invites us to experience our relationship to other bodies in a new way.

Faye Driscoll is known for works that make complex demands on the senses and make the audience aware of their own involvement in the action. Her productions, which were created in the USA, have been shown at festivals such as the Venice Biennale, Festival d'Automne Paris and the Melbourne Festival. Together with the Bremen-based company Unusual Symptoms, Faye Driscoll has now produced a new piece in Europe for the first time.

Biografie

Unusual Symptoms has been the dance company of Theater Bremen since 2012. Originally founded by the French-Algerian choreographer Samir Akika, the ensemble has been working under the artistic direction of Alexandra Morales and Gregor Runge since 2018. Working with renowned and up-and-coming choreographers from the international dance scene and in interdisciplinary constellations characterizes the new direction they have taken. In addition to productions by in-house choreographer Samir Akika, works are created by choreographers such as Claire Croizé, Faye Driscoll and Adrienn Hód, many of whom are producing in Bremen for the first time in Germany.

The company's works are not only presented in Bremen, but are also regularly invited by international festivals and dance houses. In addition to the world premieres developed together with the ensemble, Unusual Symptoms realizes projects with young performers, exchange formats and festivals. In 2020 and 2024, Unusual Symptoms and Theater Bremen were invited to the renowned Dance Platform Germany with a total of three productions.
